Essential Firewood Buying Guide (FAQs)
How is Firewood Delivered?
Firewood.co.uk delivers firewood across the UK using palletised shipments, typically arriving within 2–5 working days. Delivery options: Economy Delivery - 2–5 working days. Premium Delivery – next-day after dispatch. Nominated Day and Timed Delivery – Select your delivery window at checkout. Orders arrive via a tail-lift lorry and pallet truck. Please ensure that the delivery point is flat, hard standing (no grass, gravel or kerbs) and accessible. If your property has any access restrictions (weight, width, height, private road, no HGV) please notify us before dispatch. Deliveries are kerbside only and placement beyond this cannot be guaranteed. For full delivery details, including access requirements and delivery area exceptions, visit our delivery information page.
How Do I Know if Firewood is Dry Enough?
The most reliable way is to test with a moisture meter on split log centres – it should read below 20%. Dry firewood will have cracks in the ends, pale colour, and a hollow sound when knocked together. To erase the guesswork, buy Ready to Burn logs, which are guaranteed to have low moisture content.
How Much Firewood Do I Need for Winter?
The amount of firewood you need depends on how often you burn and the size of your appliance. Occasional weekend users may only need 1–2 cubic metres across winter. Regular evening users typically go through 1 cubic metre every 3–4 weeks during colder months. Heavy daily users often need 4–6 cubic metres to comfortably cover the heating season. Denser species like ash and oak typically last longer per load because they burn more slowly and produce higher sustained heat.
What is the Difference Between Hardwood and Softwood?
Hardwood species such as ash, oak and birch are denser, so they burn longer and produce more sustained heat. Softwood ignites quickly and burns faster, making it more suitable for kindling or starting fires. We don’t supply softwood – all our firewood (and even our kindling) is hardwood.
Can I Burn Kiln Dried Logs in a Smoke Control Area (Smokeless Zone)?
Absolutely – if the logs are Ready to Burn Certified and paired with a DEFRA-approved appliance. The Ready to Burn scheme confirms moisture content is below 20%, reducing smoke and particulate emissions. This ensures compliance with UK regulations while maintaining efficient stove performance.
