Briquettes

Wood briquettes – also called heat logs, eco logs or fire logs – are dense blocks of compressed, recycled wood such as sawdust and shavings. They're dried to a very low moisture content (typically 6–10%), so they burn hotter and longer than logs, with less smoke and ash. Their compact, uniform shape also makes them easy to handle, stack and store.

For efficiency, often yes. Briquettes can give up to 50% more heat per kg than standard firewood, so you'll refuel less often. They also:

• Light easily and burn for longer
• Produce very little smoke and ash
• Give a steady, predictable heat
• Take up less storage space

Briquettes suit most wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, open fires, fire pits, chimineas and pizza ovens – just check your appliance is approved for manufactured solid fuels.

Light them like logs: start with kindling and a firelighter, then add 1–3 briquettes once you have a good bed of flames. Don't overload at first, and give them plenty of air until they're fully alight. Many customers start with logs for the flame, then add briquettes for long, steady heat.

It depends on your stove size, insulation and how often you burn. As a rough guide, a small to medium stove uses 3–6 briquettes per burn, and most households that heat regularly through winter order at least one pallet. Because briquettes hold more energy per kg than logs, you'll need fewer to get the same heat.

Many UK households burn kiln dried logs alongside briquettes. This gives you the flame character of logs with the efficiency and long burn duration of briquettes.

You don’t need to be home for delivery, but the site must be flat, hard standing (no grass, gravel or kerbs) and accessible.

To keep your briquettes performing at their best, store them in a dry, well-ventilated area to maintain their low moisture content.

• Store indoors where possible.
• Keep briquettes raised off the ground to prevent moisture absorption
• If stored outside, use a waterproof cover and ensure good airflow.
• Avoid damp or humidity, as this can cause briquettes to expand or crumble.
