Frequently Asked Questions
Your firewood questions, answered.
What are Nestro Heat Logs?
Nestro Heat Logs are high-density wood briquettes made from 100% natural hardwood sawdust, compressed with no chemical binders or additives. Kiln dried to an exceptionally low moisture content (typically 6–10%), they deliver long-lasting, powerful heat with minimal smoke or ash. Thanks to their density and low moisture, Nestro Heat Logs burn hotter, longer, and cleaner than traditional firewood. Produced from recycled wood waste, they are a low-carbon, ecofriendly fuel.
Are Briquettes Environmentally Friendly?
Yes. High-quality briquettes are considered a low impact, carbon lean fuel because they are made from recycled wood waste such as sawdust, shavings and offcuts that would otherwise be discarded. At Firewood.co.uk, every briquette we supply is Ready to Burn certified, ensuring they have a low environmental impact and burn cleanly with reduced emissions.
Which Appliances Can I Use Briquettes In?
Briquettes are suitable for most closed wood burning and multi fuel stoves, as well as open fires, fire pits, chimineas and pizza ovens. Always check your appliance manual to ensure it is approved for manufactured solid fuels. Start with smaller loads until you understand how your briquettes burn in your particular appliance.
How Do You Light Briquettes?
Light briquettes just as you would traditional firewood. Start with kindling and a firelighter, then add 1 - 3 briquettes once you have a good bed of flames. Avoid overloading at first – allow enough airflow for your briquettes to ignite and burn cleanly before gradually adding more.
How Should I Store My Briquettes?
To keep your briquettes performing at their best, store them in a dry, well-ventilated area to maintain their low moisture content. Wherever possible, store them indoors and always keep them raised off the ground to prevent moisture absorption. If outdoor storage is necessary, ensure they are covered with a waterproof sheet while still allowing for airflow. Avoid damp conditions or high humidity, as exposure to moisture can cause briquettes to expand, soften, or crumble.
Can I Mix Briquettes with Firewood?
Yes you can. Many UK households use kiln dried firewood to start their fire, then gradually add briquettes for long-lasting, steady warmth. This gives them the flame character of logs with the efficiency and long burn duration of briquettes.
How Many Briquettes Do I Need?
This depends on your appliance size, home insulation and how often you burn. Small to medium-sized stoves typically use 3–6 briquettes per burn, so many households opt for a full pallet during UK winters. Because briquettes contain more energy per kg than logs, you generally need fewer of them to achieve the same heat output.
How does delivery work at Firewood.co.uk?
We provide fast, reliable UK-wide delivery on all firewood, briquettes, and wood pellets. Free delivery on all non-surcharged orders. Flexible delivery: you can choose a delivery date at checkout. Next-day shipping is available for a small fee. Your wood fuel will arrive on a pallet via tail-lift lorry and pallet truck, usually within 2–5 working days. You don’t need to be home for delivery, but please ensure your delivery location is flat, hard-standing, and accessible.
