frequently asked questions
Why choose kiln dried ash firewood
Ash is known as the 'King of Firewood' because it gets the balance just right: easy to light, high heat output and a long, steady burn, with a bright flame and little smoke or ash. That makes it ideal for everyday heating and occasional fires alike, in wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, open fires, fire pits, chimineas and pizza ovens. Our ash is sustainably sourced, cut to around 25cm (10 inches) to fit most UK stoves, and ready to burn the day it arrives.
Is your ash firewood Ready to Burn and suitable for Smoke Control Areas?
Yes. All our firewood meets the UK Ready to Burn standard, which means it's dried to below 20% moisture, burns cleaner with less smoke, tar and soot, and complies with UK rules on domestic wood fuel. In a Smoke Control Area, you can burn it in a DEFRA-exempt stove or other approved appliance – always check your appliance manual and local rules.
What crate sizes is kiln dried ash available in?
Kiln Dried Ash comes in three crate sizes. The Full Crate is our most popular choice for regular wood burner users, holding 2.0m³ of loose logs.
| Crate | Loose volume | Stacked volume | Crate size (H × W × L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Crate | 1.1m³ | 0.6m³ | 0.82m × 1.10m × 0.85m |
| Full Crate Most popular | 2.0m³ | 1.2m³ | 1.20m × 1.14m × 1.08m |
| Max Crate | 3.34m³ | 2.0m³ | 2.00m × 1.15m × 1.08m |
Loose volume is the UK industry and legal standard: it measures logs loosely tipped into a container. Stacked volume measures the same logs neatly packed, so it's always the smaller figure. Find out more in Loose vs Stacked Firewood Explained.
How does ash compare to other firewood?
- Ash: the best all-rounder: easy to light, strong heat and a steady burn
- Birch: lights fastest with a lively flame, but burns quicker
- Oak: burns longest and hottest, but is slower to get going
- Premium Hardwood: a balanced mix with good heat and burn time
If you want reliable results with minimal effort, ash is a safe bet.

How should I store kiln dried ash logs?
Keep your logs raised off the ground in a sheltered, well-ventilated spot such as a log store, garage or shed. Protect them from rain but let air flow around them, so they stay below 20% moisture and Ready to Burn.
