UK Regulations and Standards for Burning Firewood:

What Every Homeowner Should Know

Burning firewood or briquettes is one of the cosiest, most popular ways to heat your home. But to keep your fire safe, efficient and compliant, it is essential to understand the UK firewood regulations. It is essential to use wood fuels and appliances that comply with the latest UK regulations to ensure your fire is safe, efficient and environmentally friendly.

Burning smoky or wet wood isn’t just unpleasant – it can be unlawful. At Firewood.co.uk, every log and briquette we sell meets – and often exceeds - strict national standards, so that you can enjoy a warm fire that’s clean, compliant and environmentally responsible.

Understanding UK Air Quality Laws and the Clean Air Act

Amid rising public health concerns, The UK government has introduced several regulations to improve air quality by reducing smoke emissions from domestic fires. The most important of these are:

  • The Clean Air Act: Originally enacted in 1956, this law restricts which fuels can be burned in urban or densely populated areas.
  • The Air Quality (Domestic Fuels Standards) Regulations 2020: Sets out strict standards for moisture content and emissions from domestic wood fuel.

Many areas across the UK have been designated Smoke Control Areas (or smokeless zones), where only authorised fuels or firewood burned in approved DEFRA-exempt appliances may be used. If you are unsure whether you live in one of these zones, check your local council’s website for your postcode’s smoke control status.

Burning Wood Legally in Smoke Control Areas

Wood is not naturally smokeless. To burn it legally in smoke control areas, your firewood must either:

  • Comply with the Air Quality Regulations (2020), meaning it meets strict moisture content and emissions, or
  • Be burned in a DEFRA-exempt stove or appliance, tested and certified to limit smoke output.

If your stove or boiler isn’t exempt, you must only use authorised fuels. Burning wet or unapproved wood leads to unnecessary air pollution and can result in penalties or fines.

Ecodesign Standards for Solid Fuel Stoves

From January 2022, all new solid fuel stoves sold in the UK must meet Ecodesign standards. These regulations set strict limits on emissions of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and other harmful substances. They also set minimum energy efficiency levels - ensuring that stoves burn cleaner and hotter, and help improve UK air quality.

Key Requirements of The 2020 Air Quality Regulations

These regulations drive the UK’s Clean Air Strategy, ensuring domestic solid fuels burn cleanly and efficiently:

  • Ready to Burn Firewood: Wood sold in quantities under 2 cubic meters (typical sacks, bundles, or small bags) must be Ready to Burn certified, with a moisture content of 20% or less.
  • Larger Quantities: for quantities of 2m³ or more, suppliers aren’t obliged to certify the wood, but they must provide guidance on proper storage and drying.
  • Briquettes and Manufactured Fuels: Must meet strict standards for sulphur content (≤ 2%) and smoke emissions (≤ 5g/hour).
  • Coal Ban: The sale of traditional house coal (bituminous coal) is prohibited.

At Firewood.co.uk, all our firewood and briquettes proudly carry the Ready to Burn mark, so you can be confident your firewood is efficient, fully compliant and environmentally friendly.

What is Ready to Burn Certification?

Ready to Burn certification, supported by Woodsure, guarantees that firewood has a moisture content below 20%, ensuring it burns hotter and cleaner with less smoke and harmful emissions. Using Ready to Burn logs reduces soot buildup, lowers environmental impact, and ensures compliance with UK regulations

At Firewood.co.uk, all our firewood and briquettes proudly carry the Ready to Burn mark, so you can be confident your firewood is efficient, fully compliant and environmentally friendly.

How to Burn Firewood Responsibly at Home

To get the most from your logs and stay fully compliant:

  • Always use Ready to Burn Firewood carrying the Woodsure mark.
  • Avoid burning wet or unseasoned wood — this causes excessive smoke and dangerous creosote build-up.
  • Never burn painted, treated, or contaminated wood as these release harmful chemicals and damage your appliance.
  • If you live in a smoke control area, ensure your stove is DEFRA-exempt or Ecodesign-certified.
  • Always follow manufacturers’ guidelines for airflow, temperature, and loading to minimise smoke.
  • Maintain your chimney with regular sweeps – at least once a year - to prevent soot build-up and maintain good airflow.
  • Store your firewood off the ground in a dry, ventilated area to preserve low moisture content.
