There’s no shortage of confusion surrounding wood burning in the UK. Old habits, outdated data, and low-quality logs can give wood burners an unfair reputation. At Firewood.co.uk, we’re here to set the record straight with reliable guidance and premium, sustainably sourced firewood that keeps your home warm — cleanly, safely, and efficiently.
Here are the top 5 wood burning myths, busted with facts you can trust.
Myth 1: Burning Firewood Produces Too Much Smoke
Wood only produces excess smoke when it is too wet. Green or poorly seasoned logs contain a high level of moisture, which causes smouldering, soot, and thick smoke.
Kiln dried logs, however, burn much cleaner. Thanks to a low moisture content, they ignite faster, burn hotter, and release far fewer emissions. Since 2021, UK regulations have banned the sale of wet wood in small quantities to reduce domestic air pollution. Any wood sold in quantities under 2m³ must be Ready to Burn certified, which ensures moisture levels below 20% for a cleaner, more efficient burn.
